Much of inner Salford was built as terraced streets in the late 1800s and early 1900s, and rows of that age still stand across Seedley, Langworthy, Weaste and Pendleton. Roofs of that period are typically slate, with brick chimney stacks and lead flashing that have seen well over a century of weather.
Further out, towards Claremont and Irlams o' th' Height, semi-detached houses are more common, Broughton and Kersal have larger Victorian houses, and Ordsall and Salford Quays have newer homes and apartment blocks. Tiled roofs with mortar-bedded ridges, flat-roofed extensions and uPVC roofline are all part of the mix. We work on all of them.
We are based at 505a Liverpool Street in Salford, so Pendleton, Weaste, Ordsall, Broughton, Swinton and Eccles are all a short drive.

Salford's housing runs from tight rows of Victorian and Edwardian terraces to semis, larger period houses, post-war estates and modern homes by the Quays, and each kind of house tends to have its own roof faults. These are the jobs our roofers are called to most often across Seedley, Langworthy, Pendleton, Weaste, Ordsall and Broughton.
The terraces of Seedley, Langworthy and Weaste date from the late 1800s and early 1900s, and many were roofed in slate when they were built. Slate lasts a very long time, but the nails holding it rust through, and then slates slide down or drop out after a windy night. In most cases they can be re-fixed or replaced with matching slates, without stripping the whole roof. See our slate roofing.
Older houses in Salford often still have their original brick chimney stacks, some no longer in use. They stand in the worst of the weather, so the pointing washes out and the lead flashing at the base of the stack lifts or cracks. The result is usually a damp patch on the chimney breast or the bedroom ceiling next to it. See our chimney repairs and lead flashing repairs.
On the tiled roofs of the semis around Claremont and Irlams o' th' Height, and on post-war houses across Salford, ridge tiles and roof edges were bedded in sand and cement mortar. Years of frost and rain break that mortar down, leaving ridge tiles loose and gaps along the verge where wind and water get in. See our ridge tile repairs and dry verge systems.
Many terraces and semis in Salford have a front bay with its own small roof, covered in lead, felt or tile. When that covering cracks, or the joint against the house wall fails, water shows up as a stain on the ceiling or wall just above the window. See our bay window roof repairs.
Rear kitchen extensions, garages and dormers across Pendleton, Weaste and Broughton often have felt flat roofs that are well past their best: blistered, cracked or holding puddles after rain. A sound roof with one fault can be patched; one that has failed across the surface is better re-covered. See our flat roofing.
Moss off the roof and leaves from street and garden trees fill gutters quickly, and on a terrace one blocked length can spill onto the house next door too. Once gutters overflow, water soaks the fascia boards behind them, the timber softens and the brackets begin to pull away. See our gutter repairs and gutter cleaning.
